Windows Operating Systems for PC’s in the early days sat on top of the DOS until the Win3.0 series appeared 1988 again from the above manufacturers which was basically a picture (icon) linked to a sub set of instructions, the “.EXE” commands with separate hardware drivers for the peripheral devices. Novell was a popular server operating system on generic systems followed by Microsoft who were hard on their heel’s. Novell had NDS file system quite advanced at the time and eventually they were encouraged to let go the NDS. Their operating systems ranged from the Dos based 3.11 on floppy disk’s, 3.12 their first CD based system, 4.0, 5.0, 6.0.
Server operating systems were specific purposely designed by the company for their systems alone, IBM, ICL were the big players at the time. Windows Operating Systems for servers appeared along with generic hardware “off the shelf” CPU’s and motherboards, though Compaq, Dell and the like had dual CPU purposed built systems, Compaq Porliant 2500 to the 7000 series, scsi raid Gbite disks in the late ninety’s. Windows New Technology series started with NT3, NT3,15, NT4, NT5, NT6.
